In preparation for our Folds of Honor Fundraiser Gala, we were treated to a success story testimonial by Ms. Odetha Hill. Her family has been a recipient of care from Folds for over 8 years and because of the gifts they have given her, she said it is her pleasure to volunteer and share her story with supporters and friends. As the wife and caretaker of a disabled veteran, she appreciates how Folds of Honor supports Gold Star Families and First Responders. Odetha has applied for scholarship support from Folds and hopes to become a sports psychologist. She said, “It’s more important than ever to inspire and support the youth of today.” President Sandy closed this part of the meeting saying that this Gala Fundraiser supports such a worthwhile cause and invited everyone to participate in some way.
Del Norte Members Thanked for RYLA Contributions
We were treated to a summary of the amazing RYLA Camp experience that our district coordinated and prepared for incoming High School Seniors over the summer. Maureen Anderson, Del Norte RYLA committee chair, began the presentation by sharing pictures and told of the great efforts made by the RYLA planning committee, which was fearlessly and passionately led by our own Alice Mehlberg. Three members of our club served as counselors for the girls’ week of camp. Thank you to Monica Meyers, Jill Cook, and Sally Aslami for your dedication. And we were lucky to hear from 5 young ladies who shared their thoughts and memories of RYLA Camp with us. While each individual speaker was an individual and unique, there was a common thread in their stories… all saw the necessity of growth through challenges, all reached for opportunity and change in the midst of a struggle, and all saw beauty in themselves and others during these very focused and intentional weeks of friendship and leadership.
Guest Speaker
Larry Espinoza speaks to "Community"
From the very beginning of his time with us, it was clear that Larry is enthusiastic about and committed to his community and stated that he considers all of Albuquerque his Neighborhood. His career path reflects that as well, having worked for many different organizations including The Albuquerque Sol, 1-800GotJunk, and the Hispano Cultural Center. He is now employed by Red Shovel and is the co-founder (along with former Del Norte Guest Speaker, Dave Meyers) of Imagine ABQ. This organization encourages folks to beautify their neighborhoods year-round, but especially on the last Saturday in September so the city is welcoming and tidy for all the Balloon Fiesta visitors and guests. He hopes to expand this outreach to the unhoused population, providing a handout and a hand up. Larry’s final words to the club included a reminder of our Rotary Mottos and 4-Way Test, saying that everyone can do something for our community.
Around the Club
Club members looked on with support and friendship as Karen Wike was inducted into our club. Her face sure is familiar due to her presence in advertisements for her company, and she looked poised and happy as her husband (and Del Norte Club member) John placed the New Member Pin on her lapel. We look forward to getting to know Karen on a more personal level. Thank you for joining our club, Karen!
Luck of the Irish!
Maureen Anderson may have had help.
First Friday Fun at the Anderson's
Several members enjoyed an evening of baseball and fireworks from a skybox at Isotopes park.
Steve Becker shared on behalf of Caring Hearts that Ina Miller would love to have company, phone calls, and greeting cards as she continues to heal from a fall.

The President's Corner
As we step into September, the unmistakable aroma of roasting chili peppers fills the air—a scent that only New Mexico can bring. This time of year is a poignant reminder of the unique culture and vibrant community we are privileged to be part of here in Albuquerque. It’s a time to celebrate our roots and the spirit of service and camaraderie that defines our Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte.
Our club thrives thanks to its members' unwavering dedication, who embody the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self." Each of you contributes to our club's success through volunteering, fundraising, or simply sharing your passion for service with others. Our impact on our community is not just significant; it's profound, and we should all take immense pride in it.
This month, we proudly supported the Folds of Honor Annual Patriot Dinner on September 6. This unique event honors and provides scholarships to the spouses and children of America’s fallen or disabled military and first responders. It's a powerful testament to the spirit of service and sacrifice that we hold dear to our club. Through our partnership with the New Mexico Chapter of Folds of Honor, we have allied to ensure these families receive the support they need.
Not only does this event allow us to give back to those who have sacrificed so much, but it also directly benefits our club. A percentage of the proceeds from the Patriot Dinner goes towards funding our operating expenses, helping us continue the work we do in our community.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to each one of you for your participation in this event and for continuing to share the spirit of Rotary in all your endeavors. Your contributions are invaluable, and together, we can make a lasting difference—both in the lives of those we serve and in the strength and vibrancy of our own Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte.
Thank you for all that you do. Your unwavering dedication and service genuinely embody the spirit of our club. Let’s make this September a month to remember as we continue to profoundly impact our community and strengthen the vibrancy of our Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte.
