INNOVATION CONTINUES TO ADVANCE THE UNIVERSITY

The University of New Mexico’s 23rd President, Garnett Stokes, says, “the pack is back”.

Ms. Stokes assured us at the recent meeting that the college campus is alive with energy.

Total enrollment is up for the first time in 12 years, housing units are all full and UNM is on its way to being a national and global leader in the field of education.

UNM has defined its opportunities through the year 2040 and is excited about the possibilities that they are creating for the next 20 years.  They are pursuing ways to increase entrepreneurship and ways to attract and support people to pursue their dreams.  Through their Rainforest innovation center and other cooperatives, they are working to create new and exciting high-tech creative spaces.  One such innovation is “The Jungle” which is being expanded with the help of the creative geniuses at Meow Wolf.  It will be a highly connected community to live, work, and play all in one place.

She also discussed their continued goal of improving the healthcare needs of all citizens.  They have new leadership at the school of medicine and a new nursing program targeted at helping to fill the MD shortage in rural New Mexico.  They have also just broken ground for a new College of Nursing facility.

The future looks bright for our university.  Total gifts last year were over 126 million dollars to the UNM Foundation, contributed by over 30,000 individual donations.   Dedication and innovation will continue to advance the goals with support from our community.

3 PRESIDENTS ACCEPT A BIG CHECK!

It may have taken several years and the terms of three of our Del Norte outstanding club presidents, but we finally completed our successful Gala at the Folds of Honor Patriot Dinner.

Postponed a couple of times by the COVID pandemic, we continued to work and plan for the day we could actually have the event.  About 320 people attended the event, which was recently held at the Embassy Suites.  Our Live and Silent Auctions raised almost $50,000 for the Folds local scholarship programs.  The Folds many Corporate Sponsorships contributed many more additional funds for their worthy cause.

Head of Folds of Honor New Mexico and fellow Rotarian, Jim Quick, presented the check for $30,000 at our last club meeting, representing their contribution to our club for our help in organizing and working at the event.  Funds will be used by our club to further our many committee projects and our community service outreach.

HEY RUBBER DUCKIE!

It’s not often a half duck-half Rotarian shows up at a club meeting, but the audience was surprised when our VP, Marty Padilla, entered the room wearing some kind of duck suit.  Marty was there to promote our upcoming Polio Plus event at the Fish Fry, which will be on September 24 at the home of Ken and Cris Abbott.  (BE SURE TO SIGN UP so you can pull your duckies out of the pool!)

At the event, the swimming pool will be filled with floating yellow duckies that have been purchased by our members in hopes that they will win some great prizes.  Marty was able to sell over $2,000 in “duckie” tickets.  The Grand prize is a weekend at Kathie’s Taos House, which recently sold at the Auction for $3000.  But there will be 20 more great prizes, as well.

You can still buy tickets that day, so be sure to come and participate. You can purchase one duck for $20 or 6 for $100.

And don’t forget that this is the only place that you will get real Southern Catfish and Hush Puppies, cooked by what Barbara Lagree assured us were “real southerners”!

AROUND THE CLUB:

Congrats to President Mary Tieman, who celebrated her birthday this week.

Thanks to Mark Rudolph for spending the last 23 years as a Rotarian in our club and many more thanks to Fred Bryant for your 25 years.

It was great to see our past club president, Bill Michael, (2011-12) who stopped by for a visit and lunch, even if he did move away to join the Kiwanis.

Our Satellite donated money to help build a pergola at the Rape Crisis Center, but they need more volunteers to finish so if you want to help contact Marty Padilla.

Start saving your Blood for the next Blood Drive in October, just in time for Halloween!

Keep up the good vibes for Satellite member, Jon Helm, as he continues to recover from his recent motorcycle accident.

Keep bringing your children’s books for Literacy month.  Rachelle loves to have them!

Creative kudos to Sgt at Arms, Mark Ormerod, for coming up with a way to get more guests to attend the meetings.  Next time it’s $10 to the person who brings a plumber.

Say Goodbye and Good Wishes to Rotarians:  Marian Bolton,  Bettye Rae Francis and David Foster.  Marian and Betty Rae are both long-time members but have not participated in Rotary for several years, although they continued to keep up their membership.  Bettye Rae was a founding member of our club and past club president.  David has recently joined the Board of another non-profit organization and has decided to devote his full time to their initiatives.  He was also a past member of our Del Norte Rotary Foundation Board.
