Del Norte Rotarians
Become Hunger Heroes

Monica Padilla, our Satellite Chair, shared valuable insights into the Satellite's Backpack Program, a vital initiative serving children in need in our community.

This program was originally funded by DeL Norte Rotarians and through grants from our Rotary District. It has evolved into our official satellite service project, now sustained entirely through our club's fundraising efforts.

This program has been a lifeline for 50 children from Manzano Mesa Elementary School since its establishment in 2017.  These children receive back packs weekly, filled with essentials, including food for two breakfasts, two lunches, and three dinners, with additional peanut butter and jelly provided monthly.

The program fills 1,350 back packs annually at an average cost of $5.54 each, totaling $7,500 per year.

Monica emphasized the broader implications of childhood hunger, impacting cognitive development, behavior, emotional well-being, and overall health. In New Mexico, one in five children faces hunger issues.

How you can support this cause:

  1. Volunteer: Spare your time to pack backpacks.

  2. Send Support: If you can't volunteer, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

  3. Donate: Consider making a donation to ensure sustained assistance for these children.

For questions and/or to offer your support, reach out to Monica or any member of our Satellite for further information.

Rotarian, Tom Macek, Highlights Life in Vocational Talk
In his vocational talk, Tom shared his story.

Tom has been a part of Rotary since 1991. With the distinction of serving as President of three different clubs, he embodies the spirit of Rotarian leadership and service.

Tom and his wife are originally from Manhattan and embarked on a journey that led them to Savannah, Georgia, before settling in Albuquerque four years ago.

In addition to his Rotary engagements, Tom shares his passion for music as a member of a barber shop quartet. He recently performed at our Folds of Honor Dinner.

Tom actively serves on our Del Norte Foundation Board and is also member of our Fundraising Committee.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

As I sit down to write this message, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude that is difficult to put into words. In times of sorrow, it is the support and kindness of friends that truly sustain us. I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to each one of you for your overwhelming support during this difficult time.
Losing my brother, Ron, has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. Yet, throughout this journey, I have been continually uplifted by the outpouring of love and support from my Rotary family. Your emails, texts, cards, and flowers served as constant reminders that I am not alone in my grief, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
Moreover, seeing so many of you at Ron's funeral was a reminder of the strength and solidarity of our Rotary community. Your presence meant more to me than words can convey, and I am truly touched by your unwavering support.
In times like these, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by grief and loss. However, the kindness and compassion shown by each of you have been a beacon of light in the darkness. Your gestures, have made a world of difference to me and my family, and I am eternally grateful.
As we navigate through life's challenges, let us continue to lean on one another for support and strength. Together, we can overcome even the greatest of obstacles and emerge stronger and more united than ever before.
Thank you again for your kindness, your compassion, and your unwavering support. I am proud to serve as your president, and I am honored to be a part of such a caring and compassionate community.

With sincere gratitude,

Marty Padilla President Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte
