Del Norte Coins
Celebrate the Four Way Test

Some people believe carrying a pocket piece is a sign of good luck.  They may have chosen a milestone date or something else to remember, but no matter the reason a commemorative coin serves to remind you of something important.  For Rotarians it will remind us to apply the 4 Way Test of the things we say, think or do to everything in our lives.

Sandy Rausch, our Public Image Chair, and her Committee have chosen this coin to be used as gifts for our luncheon Speakers.  These coins are available for members and may be purchased from our Sgt. At Arms, Mark Ormeord for $10 each.

Watch For It!

RYLA DAY is on the way!  At our next club meeting, April 12, 2023, you will experience your own “Day at RYLA”.  If you have wondered what happens with our RYLA attendees at camp, here is your opportunity to learn about it.  Our RYLA Committee and RYLA volunteers are preparing to show you the “ins and outs” of a Day at RYLA.  You don’t have to come in shorts, but you do need to be prepared for a lunch of fun and fellowship.   Do come  early and partake of the buffet luncheon before the meeting starts as RYLA interactive activities will start promptly at noon.

RYLA applications due soon.

Marueen Anderson, RYLA Chair

New Mexico is the Place for Space

If “space is the final frontier” then New Mexico is leading the way for this new space era.  Uniting the space industry is the goal of CEO and Founder of New Space New Mexico, Casey Grant, who shared her vision for growing the space industry from New Mexico for the nation.  Ms. Grant, who is an electrical engineer, has worked in the industry for many years.  She started her career in New Mexico, then went on to NASA, and then returned to New Mexico.  All to assure that our state has a significant voice in the leadership of the space industry.

New Space New Mexico was founded to unite the various space programs within a non-profit organization.  This organization now sets up forums and programs for over 100 space related companies in New Mexico.  Currently one half of the space power in the US comes from our state.  This organization wants to ensure that New Mexico becomes the nexus for the  growth of this industry.

New Mexico has always played a leadership role in the race to space.  With the building of the Space Port and the continuing research at our National Laboratories, we are poised to continue this role within the industry.   New Space New Mexico’s future endeavors include strengthening their Advisory Board and establishing a new space alliance comprised of 240 member organizations.  They are going to accomplish this through monthly networking events that both excite and ignite this booming new industry.

4TH GENERATION ROTARIAN
CONTINUES HER LEGACY AT DEL NORTE

New club member Zizi Fritz and husband, Enrico Morelli shared their life’s journey at a recent meeting through our monthly Vocational Talks.  Zizi is a long-time New Mexican, whose family were the owners of Strong Thorne Funeral Homes.  Enrico, who is from Genoa, Italy, spent his career of over 40 years as a maritime engineer, on both public and private ships.  Zizi and Enrico met in 2011 while she was on a world cruise.

Zizi has spent the past few years working with businesses, foundations and non-profits.  Currently, she is the Executive Director of the Shine School Partnership, an organization that trains volunteers as mentors for a partnership with churches and schools.

Enrico retired in 2014 and spends much of his time learning and practicing his English.  He loves Rotary and working to help his community.

Around the Club

Happy March Birthdays to Clarence Hughes, Alice Mehlberg and Gary Fresquez.

Congrats to Kim Helm on 14 years with the Club and to Cathy Mazuranich and Stephanie Sanchez on 5 years.

Special thanks to Harris McClain for his significant contribution to RYLA for equipment upgrades that will be used during our 2023 Camp.

Rotarians expanded our community service outreach by working at the Albuquerque Christian Children’s Home assisting with odd jobs and reading to children.

Mike Skolnick is looking for sponsors for the May 20 Golf Tournament.  The proceeds from this event will benefit our Rotary Del Norte Foundation and the Veteran’s Integration Center (VIC).

Welcome back to Mick Burke and Sheryl Petersen.  We hope you’re back to stay.

Former club member, Donna Pedace, came to a recent meeting to thank Mark Rudolph for his inspiring Police Officer of the Month program and joined us for lunch.   Donna has introduced the  Police Officer of the Month program to the Los Lunas Rotary Club and it is a great success.

Special thoughts and prayers for Rotarian Tanya McKinney, who is in Chicago caring for her mother in law, who is recovering from a tragic accident.

Kudos to President-Elect Maria Montoya-Chavez who did a great job conducting our meeting in President Mary’s absence.

Stephanie Sanchez brought a potential new member.

Thanks to Hass Aslami, who continues to bring in potential new members through his Fundaxi Angel program.

Mike Skolnick recognized Hass for his company’s great catering services.

Sgt at Arms, Mark Ormerod, presented our very first commemorative 4 way test coin to our guest speaker.

Mark presented the Lucky Bucks contestant with one of his custom ‘Homeless Pacs’.  He prepares and distributes these pacs to to those he sees on the street.  Now that’s “Service above Self”!

Paul and Vicki Christensen Moving On

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the resignation of Paul Christensen from Del Norte Rotary.  Although we will miss Paul, we are happy for him and for Vicki as they move to Denver to be closer to their daughter and her family.

Paul has been a member of our club since June of 1993 and has held many positions on the Board and the Foundation over the years.  Paul said that he will greatly miss his many friends from Rotary and wishes the club the best in the years to come.
