Danielle Casey Speaks on Building a Regional Economy

Danielle Casey, President and CEO of Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (A.R.E.A.), detailed the new structure of Albuquerque’s economic growth and development plans aimed at diversifying the economic base of the Albuquerque region.  The aim is to create a prosperous, diverse and inclusive economy, and elevating the standard of living for all.  The new structure serves a four county area and has a 45 member Board of Directors plus robust Advisory Councils.

Ms. Casey’s goal of making our economy more competitive focuses on bringing together numerous groups to ensure all questions about a company entering into a community are answered, from training needs to available housing.  Economic relocation is an extremely competitive environment and there is often intense competition for jobs, capital investment money and talent.

A.R.E.A. has an immediate strategic goal of creating 8,000 new jobs in targeted industries, focusing on areas such as manufacturing, film and media, aerospace, bio-life sciences, and corporate and professional services.  Establishing a national identity as a leading destination for businesses will ultimately provide more growth in these areas.

Ms. Casey cited that almost 2,000 new jobs have been created this year.   Talent for targeted industries remains the hardest piece of successful economic development.  If you want to help with input that will speak to this talent go to the new online quiz site (live.alb.org), where one can make suggestions of how to maximize the economic resources of our communities.

Rotarians Host Fred Harvey Dinner for Gala Guests

On a recent Friday night a group of friends, who were recent attendees at the Folds of Honor Gala, attended the Fred Harvey dinner that they purchased at the live auction at the event.  10 lucky winners were picked up by a limo, provided by Rotarian Fred Bryant, and driven to the home of Rotarian and Chef, Kathie Williams, where they were served a 7 course authentic Fred Harvey dinner in 1880’s style.  Items on the menu included, Crab and Shrimp au Gratin, Cream of Onions soup, Rack of Lamb with Mushrooms and Asparagus, Lyonnaise Potatoes and Strawberry Sundaes.  All recipes were from the original Harvey House Test Kitchens.

Rotarian President Mary Tieman and husband, Allen, furnished the wines and Mary served as a Harvey Girl.  Rotarian wives, Evelyn Bryant and Pat Quick also served as Harvey Girls,  dressed in their authentic black with white aprons.  Rotarian Jim Quick entertained with stories about Fred Harvey and he and Pat presented the attendees with copies of the latest Fred Harvey book, “Appetite for America”.

Guests described the evening as “magical” and something that they would purchase again.

Just a reminder from Foundation Chair, Steve Becker, that you still have time to donate to our own Del Norte Foundation.  If you are  looking for charitable donations to make  before the end of the tax year, please  consider our Foundation, where 100% of the money goes to our local charities.  You can also make the Foundation a beneficiary in your will or make a monthly pledge through United Way at your work.  Steve is always available if you have more questions about how to contribute.

From the Desk of President Mary Tieman

…and in the blink of an eye, this year has flown by. December marks the halfway point in the Rotary year, and I would like to say thank you for your continued support of our great club. I am always inspired by the numerous opportunities discovered and shared by our members for innovative fundraising and community activities that are relevant and impactful. You are definitely making a positive difference in our community and the world.

While the holiday season is in full swing, this is also a great time to take a break and reflect on all of the great things we can do as Rotarians. At our last board meeting and club meeting, Del Norte Rotary Foundation President, Steve Becker provided an update on funds for future community grants. For so many this time of the year provides a spirit of giving, and I hope you will consider a generous donation to our Del Norte Rotary Foundation.

It is such a blessing that Rotary provides the great gift of fellowship and friendship. Our Club Services or “Social Committee” does an outstanding job of providing opportunities to bring all of us together. Allen and I look forward to celebrating the holiday season with you at our party on December 11th. It is going to be a wonderful evening filled with great food, lots of laughter and holiday festivities.

In closing I wish you and your family peace, health, happiness, and prosperity in the coming year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Mary Tieman, President
