It was a special day at Del Norte Rotary this week as the club honored our own veterans and listened to an inspirational talk by veteran’s advocate John Garcia.  A veteran himself, John has been  recognized many times for his outstanding contributions to the veteran community in New Mexico.  Since he came home from Vietnam in 1970 he has dedicated his life to making veterans a priority.  kJohn was also the creator of the Veteran’s Integration Center and has served on numerous SBA Advisory Boards,

advocating for veterans and business owners.

John’s talk centered around the importance of, not only all veterans, but especially on the significant role of the Vietnam veteran in developing appreciation for the veteran’s of today.

This was especially significant now as it is the 40th Anniversary of the Vietnam Wall.

58,000 men were killed in Vietnam.  61% were under the age of 21 and the average age of the soldier was 18.  He highlighted that only 1% of the American people ever put on a uniform to serve their country so during that time it was especially significant that these young men stood up to honor their country in this way.

Because of these Vietnam veterans there is now a common bond and deep respect for those veterans who returned home to contribute to their communities.  They have created a renewed pride in the flag and their legacy has made a difference to all veterans today.

Dignity…pride…respect…and honor are now given to these Vietnam veterans who served a grateful nation.
