Since (nearly) everyone in attendance is a PNM customer, it was especially informative to have PNM specialists Alaric and John as our guest speakers on Apr. 19th.
Electric and gas operations began in Albuquerque as early as 1882, and the Albuquerque Gas and Electric Company was formed in 1917. Throughout the years, many changes in services and partnerships occurred to better serve our state, and currently, the organizational goal is to be 100% carbon free by 2040. Much of the discussion focused on Electric Vehicles, including ease of use, various charging station locations, what time of day is best to charge the vehicle, and incentive offers for folks who have or hope to have an EV soon. It was a lively, conversational time of sharing questions, experiences, and anecdotes of this new kind of travel, and we thank these gentlemen for spending time with our club.
4-Way Test Essay Winners
The April 23rd meeting was a celebration of amazing youth in our community. We congratulate the winners of our Club’s 4-Way Test Essay Contest. We were especially pleased to announce that one writer’s submission was also a District-Level award winner. Well done, students and sincere congratulations to your teachers and families. We were also treated to a performance by the Sandia High School Guitar Ensemble and thank them for sharing their talents and friendship with us through their lovely performance.

Satellite Happenings
Marilyn Strube, Contributing
Speaker Tracy Rodden
Del Norte Satellite did not meet April 2, 2025, but was notified of two opportunities to volunteer and make a difference in our community in April. The first opportunity was a collaboration with the Guys Give organization and volunteer at Saranam to build a much-needed fence. The second opportunity to serve our community was for the Springtime Extravaganza at the Gateway Family Center.
At the Satellite meeting held on April 16 guest Speaker Tracy Rodden from Feed NM Kids provided the program. Ms. Rodden provided information on how Feed NM Kids evolved from recognizing that New Mexico leads the nation in childhood hunger. There is a need to feed New Mexico children throughout the state. Feed NM Kids is a nonprofit organization that operates within the city of Albuquerque, but partners with thirty-five organizations throughout New Mexico to reach out to New Mexico children. Feed NM Kids delivers nutritious non-perishable snack packs to schools within the Albuquerque Public School system for them to distribute to needy children. The organization recognizes the importance of meeting children’s nutritional needs and is similar to our very own Manzano Mesa Backpack program. Both know that hungry children cannot focus on learning when they are worried about where their next meal will come from. However, when a hungry child receives food assistance regularly there is notable improvement in their attendance, behavior, and grades.
After Ms. Rodden’s presentation, Monica Padilla reviewed social and volunteer opportunities for all Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Norte members to participate in. The next Satellite meeting will be held at the Padilla’s on Wednesday, May 7th at 6:00pm. Social time begins at 5:45pm.

The President's Corner
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
What a month April has been! May is often a time of reflection and recognition in Rotary, and I am so proud of all we have accomplished together.
One of our most meaningful traditions—the Four-Way Test Essay Contest—concluded with outstanding participation from local students. Thank you to Jill Cook and her dedicated committee for organizing this year’s contest with care and excellence. Their hard work ensured a seamless and inspiring program. We were delighted to award the following students:
1st Place – Tanya Wyatt, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School (also placed THIRD in the District 5520 Four-Way Test Essay Contest)
2nd Place – Gabriela Del Angel, St. Thomas Aquinas School
3rd Place – Noel Gallego, St. Thomas Aquinas School
These remarkable young people offered thoughtful insights into how Rotary’s Four-Way Test applies to their lives and the world around them. We also enjoyed an outstanding Sandia High School Advanced Guitar Ensemble performance, whose talent brought energy and grace to our event.
Last month, we had an incredible presence at the District 5520 Conference in El Paso, TX, with fifteen members from our club in attendance! Thank you to all who represented us so well. We proudly presented our "Year of Cheer" display, highlighting our club's involvement and the significant impact possible for the UNMH and El Paso Children’s Hospitals. Special thanks go to Alice Mehlberg and Berdel Boulanger for designing and setting up such vibrant and engaging displays and project activities. You made us shine!
We are also celebrating an exciting honor: Congratulations to Jerry Becker and Steamatic of Albuquerque, winner of the 2024–2025 Rotary District 5520 Sonny Brown Business of the Year Award (At-Large Business Category). This prestigious award recognizes businesses that demonstrate exceptional commitment to service and community, which Jerry and Steamatic have exemplified through their involvement with the Veterans Integration Centers of New Mexico (VIC). This recognition is well deserved and a testament to Jerry's unwavering commitment to service, which embodies the Rotary spirit.
In recognition of this work, we are changing things for our May 14 club meeting. Instead of our usual picnic at Rotary Park, we will take a field trip to the Veterans Integration Center. Thank you, Jerry, and your team, for opening your doors and sharing a tour of this remarkable facility that supports our veterans.
Our May Happy Hour event will be at Barbara and Brooks LaGree's home on Friday, May 2, at 5:30 PM. We sincerely thank Barbara and Brooks for opening up their home for fellowship and fun. Your hospitality is genuinely appreciated!
Another special event is on Wednesday, May 21, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the new Element Hotel rooftop patio bar Volare. We will celebrate the end of another fabulous Del Norte Rotary year with fun, food, and fellowship. You will receive an email with specific information on how to sign up. The cost of the event is $40/person.
Let’s carry this momentum into the final months of the Rotary year with gratitude, energy, and continued dedication to “Service Above Self.”
Yours in Rotary Service,
Sandy Rausch
