Organizations have been championing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) since about the year 2005. Although not established until 2016, R4Creating, established by Dr. Shelly Gruening, has made great strides and has caught up to, and surpassed many of the educational initiative's earlier entrants through the help of its hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
At R4 Creating, the aim is to bolster support for organizations that significantly increase the number of STEM opportunities for students. This is achieved through a structured STEM pipeline process that guides students through four developmental stages resulting in academic, personal, and career successes. Students navigate this process independently, engaging in a series of proven programs designed to cultivate a competitive advantage for the student.
Dr. Gruenig highlighted numerous successful outcomes of the program that continue to light a fire and develop a passion for STEM. This program also utilizes summer technology camps and regional competitions that provide leadership and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Volunteers are an integral part of the program’s success. Reach out to R4Creating.org if you are interested in nurturing and empowering students, and advancing STEM education in our communities.

Fred Bryant announced that the February 17, 2024 Blood Drive is moving forward with a goal of collecting 100 pints of blood. Fred noted that employees and/or friends of our club business owners who donate will also be counted toward our goal. Mark your calendars for Feb 17 and help us achieve 100 pints.
Around the Club
Our very own Maria Montoya Chavez was featured in Albuquerque Business First this week. Her new position as President and CEO of the law firm Sutton, Thayer and Browne was acknowledged. Maria has been with the law firm since the year 2000. Congratulations, Maria!
It was nice to see Member John Perner, who shared personal insights regarding the Lobo’s new football coach. John promised to bring him as a guest speaker next year.
Kurt Kinifick with Miracle Ear received brags from Fred Bryant, who is enjoying his new updated hearing aids. Though they provide improved reception, Fred said he can also turn them off if he doesn’t want to hear you!
Happy Anniversary to Mike and Sam Creedon
Tom Macek celebrates 33 years in Rotary, Mike Skolnick, 26 years, Noel Valencia 9 years, Harris McClain 7 years and Tanya McKinney 3 years.
Welcome back to Joseph Griego who has visited us several times and continues to want to join the club.
Thank you
to our Sheraton Wait Staff
President Marty shared our club's gratitude and generosity with our luncheon wait staff. Over $500 was collected from our members and was presented to them.
Rotarian, Sheryl Petersen,
Continues to Serve the Community
Sheryl Petersen, a recent addition to our club, brings over 15 years of Rotary experience from California. Having spent 27 years as a high school teacher and administrator there, Sheryl's deep roots in service and community development paved her path to Rotary.
Her introduction to Rotary came through community projects requiring extra resources, leading her to remark, 'That's when Rotary entered my life,' and it's been an integral part ever since. She has actively contributed to environmental initiatives, clean water projects, and amidst the challenges of COVID, she dedicated her efforts to sending personal cards and additional meals to clients of Meals on Wheels.
Upon relocating to Albuquerque, Sheryl explored various Rotary Clubs but found her fit with Del Norte due to our unmistakable 'spirit of service.'
Sheryl has proven to be a valuable addition to our club, lending her support to the Membership and Club Service Committees.”
Around the Club Continued
Big thanks to Marty and Monica Padilla for graciously hosting the Holiday Party for 30, an auctioned item from September's Folds of Honor Patriot Dinner. Their festively themed house provided the perfect setting for the festivities.
Hats off to ELF Maria Montoya Chavez for stepping in for Sgt. At Arms, Mike Skolnick, who started his holiday break early.
A warm welcome to Fred's guest, Roberto Aquirre, CEO of Central NM YMCA, who has applied to join our club. Roberto is a former Rotarian. We are excited about his potential future involvement with us.
A hearty welcome to Ruth Ronan's sister, Thera, here for the Christmas Holiday.
Kudos to Rotarian John Perner for keeping us updated on the recent successes of the UNM Lobos.
ELF Jacquie Bernstein shared unfortunate news about Locker 505, a clothing resource for low-income families' children in Albuquerque. It was recently robbed of its winter coats. Jacquie circulated a donation envelope, and Norm Liss committed to continue fundraising efforts until we reach at least $1000 for this admirable cause.”
Save the Dates
ELF Sherri Wells has declared January 19, 2024, as the date for our Annual White Elephant Gift Exchange Party. Rotarian Kathie Williams will graciously host the pot luck at her home. Remember to bring a $20-$25 white elephant gift and a side dish. Stay tuned for further details in an upcoming email from our Executive Secretary
ELF Noel Valencia wants to ensure that you save January 24, 2024, for our Rotary Business Network Lunch. Twenty-one of our Business Members and Non-profit organizations will showcase their endeavors at tables and displays in order to share valuable information. Join us from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, show support for these members, enjoy lunch, and who knows, you might even snag a fantastic door prize generously donated by these businesses."
Del Norte bids 2023 adieu,
Welcomes 2024 with spirits anew,
New adventures beckon, with promises due!
Happy New Year!!!
It Was the Last Meeting of the Year
and President Marty Had Disappeared
Then All of a Sudden Santa Appeared
Bringing Tons of Christmas Cheer!
If you missed our holiday meeting, you missed seeing President Marty once again donning a creative costume to amuse and delight our Rotary members. Of course, this time it was a fabulous Santa outfit. The program was all about celebrating the holiday season.
Rotarian Maureen Anderson brought her quartet friends from the Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus called "Better Than Therapy", and Michelle, Anita, Laura, and Patty delighted us with beautiful Christmas tunes. Maureen joined them at the end with a rousing rendition of "Feliz Navidad!"
Every Rotarian whose name started with an 'S' was in contention for the best holiday attire. Several received a lucky bucks ticket. Personally, this Northwind Editor would have given it to Zac Anaya, who came dressed in his 'string of Christmas Lights' sport coat.
The lunch ended with a rousing rendition of 'The 12 Days of New Mexico Christmas.' The '2 Prairie Dogs' group was great, but the clear winner was the head table who belted out '5 Turquoise Rings' with gusto!"

A special shout-out to our AG, George Greenlee, who has been a frequent guest throughout the year. George wanted to express gratitude to the club and celebrate our collective successes. He mentioned that he always looks forward to President Marty's entertaining ideas, and today did not disappoint! George gifted Marty with some "Rotary Bringing Hope to the World" socks, acknowledging Marty's knack for 'knocking your socks off' with his initiatives!
